We saw it coming . . . a big rain was heading straight for the Ozarks.  Eight to 12 inches of rain was the estimate, and, unfortunately, the weather man wasn't wrong this time.  But Monday morning, December 28, we were looking at 73,000 cubic-feet-per-second of water running by our back door.

Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is a place dear to my own heart. I worked there as an intern in 2005 and continued to work there on and off for several years following. The hatchery is operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation and is responsible for stocking more than 700,000 trout into Lake Taneycomo each year. Five cold-water state hatcheries keep Missouri’s colder waters teeming with trout, and of those five, Shepherd of the Hills is the largest.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced it will fully launch its new online E-Permits, gearing for February, meaning our office license machines and printers will be pulled. But outdoorsmen can already purchase any fishing or hunting license online  -- and the new MDC smart phone app anulls the need for licenses to be printed out.  Each person, even children, will have their own log-in, which will be a little time consuming initially.  We plan to still try to help guests who do not have smart phones or who have not printed their online licenses out ahead of time....
